The Grand National

An introduction to this Grand National website

The Derby, The Melbourne cup The Velká pardubická The Kentucky Derby, , all great races from around the world but one race over the years is rated by many, me included, as the worlds greatest race. The Grand National. Staged in the spring at Liverpool in the UK The Grand National is a unique test of horse and horsemanship that is unequalled anywhere in the world.
A jockey with the foresight to follow the right course around the track, to stay out of trouble and get his mount into a good position at the run-in is a must in this race. Then if the horse is good enough and brave enough they can take the prize of The Grand National and add their names to the list of greats to the role of honor that is the winners list of The Grand National.
What about luck? Yes this also has a role in the race but The Grand National is such a unique test of stamina jumping and horsemanship that in The Grand National horses can often loose the race through bad luck but it is not often the case that horse and rider wins the Grand National through good luck alone.
So what is so unique about The Grand National?

The Grand National experience

Grand_National_Greats
Firstly it is the distance Around 4 and a half miles (4 Miles 856 yards) a marathon distance by any standards. Secondly the fences. There are thirty Grand National fences to be taken, 16 on the first circuit of the race and 14 on the next. The fences are also unique offering different size in height, width and also landing height. The Grand National drop fences are legendry, this is where the landing side of the fence is lower than the take off side, but there are also higher landing side fences. The next part of this unique race is the number of runners. The Grand National is currently limited to 40 runners but in the past there have been as many as 66 runners. 40 inevitably sees much trouble in running and connections chances The Grand National are often lost by horses being brought down or falling because they are unsighted coming to a fence or the horse in front has fallen. The handicap is the next to be considered. The Grand National is a handicap race this means that horses of top standard carry more weight that horses of a lesser ability this is the handicap factor and therefore to win a horse theoretically must improve on his past form.
As you can see there are many factors which make up The Grand National and this is perhaps why The Grand National is still one of the premiere horse races after over 160 years of running.
